What the tool does, beyond drawing
Anyone can draw a Sankey diagram. Three mechanisms make the difference once a study gets serious: a solver that computes the flows you never measured, hierarchies that show the same model at several levels of detail, and labels that fit several years, several scenarios and several readings into a single file.

Your data is incomplete, redundant, sometimes contradictory. The solver treats every node as an equation and every uncertainty as a weight, then returns a consistent set of values — or a range, when the information isn't enough.

A node can contain nodes of its own. Collapse it for the overview, expand one branch for the detail — no second file, no redrawing, and the reader of a published diagram can do it too.

They are the three places where a drawing tool stops. Without a solver, every arrow has to carry a number you found somewhere else. Without hierarchies, a detailed model is unreadable and a readable one is wrong. Without labels, a second year is a second file — and three years into a study, nobody knows which one is authoritative.
The three combine: you reconcile at one level of the hierarchy, on a given label dimension, and the result publishes as it stands. The comparison with other tools says which of them do as much.
