The French wine supply chain is one of the world's foremost: around 45 million hectolitres of wine produced a year, a major share of it under designations of origin (AOP), and a structural trade surplus (exports far exceed imports, mostly generic bulk wine intended for bottling). It stands out through the diversity of its products — still red, rosé and white wines, sparkling wines, and eaux-de-vie (Cognac, Armagnac) distilled from dedicated white wines — and through the weight of its co-products (pomace and lees), almost entirely recovered in distilling, fertilisation and energy.
