Regional food supply-chain flows — Occitania, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Normandy

These diagrams were produced in 2022-2023 as part of a study on the resilience of regional food systems carried out for the French agency ADEME by the research consultancy BASIC. TerriFlux was subcontracted to build the flow diagrams of several emblematic supply chains across three French regions: Occitania, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Normandy. The diagrams supported regional workshops gathering supply-chain stakeholders, alongside SWOT analyses (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats).

What the diagrams show

  • Wine: the wine supply chains of Occitania and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, from harvest to consumption and export.
  • Oyster and mussel farming: production, processing and marketing of oysters and mussels in Occitania.
  • Fisheries in Normandy: the main landed species, including scallops, mackerel and herring.

Each diagram traces physical flows from production to final uses and highlights the share of imports and exports as well as losses along the chain.

Method and sources

The diagrams were produced with the AF Filières method: definition of each supply chain's structure with domain experts (EurekaMer for the marine chains), collection of public and professional data (Agreste statistics, 2020/2021 aquaculture surveys), reconciliation of flows with handling of missing data, and rendering as interactive Sankey diagrams. Reference years are 2019 for fisheries (pre-COVID year) and 2020-2021 for shellfish farming.

Partners and funding

  • BASIC: lead contractor of the study, regional diagnoses and workshop facilitation
  • EurekaMer: expertise on marine supply chains (shellfish farming, fisheries)
  • TerriFlux: flow modelling and visualisation

This study was carried out on behalf of ADEME.
