Stage 3 of the journey (see the site home page): the printed version.
In 2026 the Waste Management Department of the Pays Voironnais asked TerriFlux to replace the "flows" double page of its annual report with a Sankey diagram. This diagram is the deliverable of that commission: it was supplied in A3 format to the authority's communication agency, which laid it out in the report.
The reading runs from left to right, in four steps: the origin (kerbside collection, bring banks, civic amenity sites and external inputs); the flows by material (residual waste, packaging and paper, glass, food waste, green waste, then rubble, wood, furniture, cardboard, metals, WEEE and other recyclables); sorting, transfer and transit (the La Buisse ecological site and the Athanor sorting centre, with the sorting residues it produces); and treatment — energy recovery through incineration, organic recovery (compost, mulch, water, screening residues) and material recovery through recycling channels.
37 nodes, 51 flows: the structure was deliberately kept tight, because a printed page cannot be hovered over or zoomed into.
The 2024 and 2025 tonnages were supplied by the department. The work was not about the data but about the structure of the diagram and its layout, through some thirty iterations with the department. The rendering decisions — black background, colours distinct from the grey already used for residual waste, pictograms and typeface from the report's charter — were made by the authority.
