Flows of the French forest-wood sector — 2019, 2030, 2050

Flow diagrams of the forward-looking study of the French forest-wood sector carried out by Carbone 4. They give a visual, consistent reading of national wood flows at three horizons: 2019, the reference state, then 2030 and 2050, produced by the prospective model.

The study, its model and its scenarios are Carbone 4's work. TerriFlux produced the visualisation: turning the model results into Sankey diagrams.

What the diagrams show

The whole sector, from the forest resource to demand markets, with the three main wood outlets made comparable across horizons:

  • sawnwood, towards construction and renovation, packaging and other uses;
  • industrial wood — roundwood harvested in the forest, sawmill co-products, second- and third-processing residues — towards paper, furniture and construction;
  • wood energy, towards its own markets.

Moving from one horizon to the next shows where the scenario shifts the volumes: which resources are mobilised, which uses grow, and where tensions appear between competing outlets.

Data and sources

  • The results of Carbone 4's physical and prospective model for the three horizons: the study itself, with its assumptions and scenarios.
  • The allocation of volumes to demand markets, which draws on the VEM — the French forest-wood sector's shared economic monitoring — and its supply-and-use table.
