Material and energy flows of a production company

This demonstration presents the input-output balance of an industrial site as a Sankey diagram. The data is entirely fictitious: the company, its products and its tonnages were invented to illustrate the method.

The diagram follows the flows passing through the site: raw materials, components, energy, water and packaging come in; they go through the production, packing, storage and transport stages; they leave as products delivered to customers, as waste (production waste, defective products, packaging waste) and as CO2 emissions. Tags let you filter flows by type and nodes by responsibility or function. The values were reconciled so that every stage is balanced.

It is a textbook case of material flow analysis (MFA) at the scale of an organisation, produced with the OpenSankey software. Explore the diagram: hover over the flows to read the values, and switch tags to change the point of view.
