This set of diagrams provides a systemic biophysical picture of the French national economy, expressed in flows of materials and energy. It was built in 2021-2022 by Emmanuel Krieger during a Master's (M2) internship hosted in the STEEP team (Inria Grenoble / Laboratoire Jean Kuntzmann), using TerriFlux tools (OpenSankey, flow reconciliation). The aim was a rapid, transversal coverage of the whole economy rather than an in-depth sector-by-sector analysis: nine supply chains mapped in a few months, with their uncertainties made explicit.
Nine reconciled Sankey diagrams, one per supply chain: non-metallic minerals (kt), steel, aluminium, copper and lead (kt), fossil fuels (kt), waste (kt), water withdrawals (Mm³) and energy (TWh) — around 390 reconciled flows in total. Hatched flows follow a simple reading convention: they mark "free" values that were not entered by the modeller but set by the reconciliation solver within an interval, and therefore carry higher uncertainty.
Each diagram follows the AF Filières method: definition of the supply-chain structure, data collection, reconciliation of flows with uncertainty handling, and Sankey rendering. Sources include ADEME, SDES, Eurostat, UNICEM/UNPG, Infociments and the négaWatt energy balance. As no harmonised database covers all these materials, reference years range from 2013 (water) to 2020 (minerals, waste) and the level of detail varies from one diagram to the next — a limitation that is documented openly, diagram by diagram.
